Jeff and I had two great days on the water - tides in our favor and calm winds - and buzzards bay has so much structure to explore - was hoping for some topwater action like a couple of weeks ago but with the cold snap it just wasn't meant to be so the next best thing for me is the big bite bio bait in baby trout pattern - it's the only plastic i have been throwing for the last two months in the salt - it's rigged weedless and with a number 4 wide gap hook i'm having a pretty good hookup ratio - both days started out slow for me with the reds but friday i caught a small but legal trout pretty quickly - wasn't until the rising tide along grass that we found the reds - ended up with 10 reds 6 on Friday - (pics on Kayak Wars website - north east region NCKFA Finstalkers - but the highlight memory of the two days is a personal best red - i have had some nice fights before with upper slot and just over slot - but i knew this was the biggest for me when the drag kept ripping on multiple runs - it hit in some skinny water along a grass line and the splashes were an indication she wasn't happy - i got lucky after a brief run toward the grass got it turned and headed into deeper water and tried to wear her out but i think she won that battle because when it was released she still had plenty of energy and took off immediately while i was wiped out - it's a long tournament so get out and fish - i think lots of folks are surprised about what's rolling in for the april segment and we are only half way thru the month - many lead changes have happened and more than likely the current standings will change - so it's not over and not to late - go have some fun!
(If your not aware buzzards bay is the southern part of the fort fisher area just north of bald head island between wilmington and southport - you can access it by launching at the basin of the fort which is a long paddle or with 4 x 4 drive down the beach to crossover 4 - it's marked - and have an easy 20 - 30 minute paddle to buzzards )
